  123. You have two options: Professional installation by an authorized RCA
  124. installer or self-installation if you're handy and feel comfortable
  125. working on a ladder. Thomson Consumer Electronics recommends
  126. professional installation from the nationwide network of over 3000
  127. authorized installers. For the self-installer, your RCA dealer has a
  128. wide variety of DSS system accessories to make your installation easier.

  208. picture will freeze the last good received frame of video during periods
  209. of moderate to heavy rain until signal level improves (usally after it

  257. Q. - I would like to save myself some money! What is required in the
  258.      BASIC installation of a RCA DSS System?
  259.  
  260. A. - . Mounting the dish to antenna to a solid vertical roof or frame
  261.      . Running 100 Feet of cable through a normal frame structure or
  262.        one layer of masonry
  263.      . One Television Hook-up
  264.      . One phone line hook-up or running ann extention line if phone
  265.        jack is not near the IRD
  266.      . Grounding the Dish Antenna
  267.      . Adding additional optional stand-alone receiver to additonal
  268.        room in the house if needed. (Optional)
  269.  
  270. Q. - Does RCA provide a Do-It-Yourself Installation Kit with the
  271.      purchase or the DSS System?
  272.  
  273. A. - RCA offers the RCA DSS Self-Installation Kit (DKIT94) for
  274.      additional cost. RCA also offers a Chimney Mount Kit (D915) for
  275.      additional cost. Some dealers do NOT offer these kits and only
  276.      provide installation for additional cost. Make sure if you want to
  277.      do it yourself, that you ask your dealer if this is OK. You will
  278.      need the DKIT94 in order to do the install though.
  279.  
  280. Q. - What kind of warranty does RCA offer on the RCA DSS?
  281.  
  282. A. - RCA only offers a standard 90 day warranty. Some dealers do offer
  283.      extended warrranty for additional cost.
  284.  
  285. Q. - What about network programming? (ABC, CBS, NBC, PBS, FOX)
  286.  
  287. A. - You currently have three options:
  288.  
  289.      (1) Use a set of rabbit ears to bring in your local stations.
  290.      (2) Add an outdoor external antenna.
  291.      (3) Continue your BASIC cable service. (This should only be in the
  292.          range of $7 to $15 per month.)
  293.      (4) Install a traditional C Band dish instead. It offers over 100
  294.          FREE channels, DSS offers NO free channels.
  295.  
  296. Q. - Does DirecTV and USSB plan to add additional channels?
  297.  
  298. A. - Both DirecTV and USSB do plan to add additional programming.
  299.      Channels will be added over the course of time.
  300.  
  301. Q. - As of this writing how many channels are currently on line?
  302.  
  303. A. - As of this writing about 70 to 74 channels are currently on the
  304.      system. Many of them are Pay-Per-View.
  305.  
  306. Q. - Can I record Pay Per View programs from my DSS system on my VCR?
  307.  
  308. A. - Most of the time, NO. Most of the Pay Per View programs broadcast by
  309.      DSS are encrypted with a signal that will confuse your VCR's AGC
  310.      circuits and you will not get a good recording.
  311.  
  312. Q. - Do you really have to have the system hooked to your phone line?
  313.  
  314. A. - Yes, you do. The phone hookup is necessay to serve as an audit
  315.      trail and security for the system. The built-in modem on the
  316.      satellite receiver ensures that the receiver is in the paying
  317.      customer's home to prevent piracy. It also sweeps the memory
  318.      monthly to generate a monthly bill for the subscription services
  319.      as well pay-per-view. This also means that you cannot move your
  320.      receiver to your summer (or winter) vacation home and have it
  321.      continue to work for very long.
  322.  
  323. Q. - Is everything still on schedule?
  324.  
  325. A. - YES! DBS-1, North America's first high-powered DBS satellite was
  326.      successfully launched on December 17, 1993 which opened the road
  327.      to the Digital Skyway(tm) entertainment network. The DSS system
  328.      hardware, and DirecTV and USSB programming was on line beginning
  329.      April 1994.
  330.  
  331. Q. - When will the product be distributed in foreign markets?
  332.      (Will it work in Canada, Mexico, Alaska, or Hawaii?)
  333.  
  334. A. - The broadcast beam of the DBS Satellite will service the contiguous
  335.      48 initially. (The satellite footprint will not allow use of the
  336.      current DSS hardware in Hawaii or Alaska.) Expansion into foreign
  337.      markets rests with programming contracts and government regulation.
  338.      The Mexican and Canadian goverments must OK the reception of USSB
  339.      and/or DirecTV programming in their respective countries before DSS
  340.      or its programming can be sold in Mexico and Canada.
  341.  
  342. Q. - Does it do any good to buy the programming before I buy my system?
  343.  
  344. A. - No, you need to have the system first. Many places sell the
  345.      programming or offer to sell the programming when you buy your
  346.      system. Currently USSB and DirecTV offer some "FREE" programming
  347.      for the first month while you have your system. Check with your
  348.      dealer about this when you buy your system. It is most likely best
  349.      to buy some programming when you get your system, so once it is
  350.      installed you can call in and they can send a hit to make you
  351.      active right away. If you fail to get some programming, once the
  352.      system is installed all you will get is a test pattren till they
  353.      make activate your receiver.
  354.  
  355. Q. - What does it cost on the average for programming?
  356.  
  357. A. - This is a hard question to answer. Depending on what services you
  358.      take will set the cost of the programming. On the average to get
  359.      what you have now on cable including some movie channels it is
  360.      going to run you about $50 to $65 per month. Diffrent programming
  361.      packages are availiable and some discount is offered if you pre-pay
  362.      your programming for the entire year. The cost is about the same as
  363.      current average cable programming. Incidentally, the same programming
  364.      is available on traditional C Band systems and much lower costs.
  365.  
  366. Q. - OK, I'm SOLD! Where can I get a system?
  367.  
  368. A. - Good luck! Availability of the DSS system has been spotty at best.
  369.      Sears and Circuit City are dealers in areas that sell the RCA DSS
  370.      system. Many dealers in these areas will ship one to you, some will
  371.      insist that you come in and pick it up.
  372.  
  373. Q. - If I get a DSS System from one of these areas and I don't live in
  374.      the area that sold me the DSS System will RCA turn it on?
  375.  
  376. A. - Yes, they have no problem with someone going to get or ordering one
  377.      from one of the market areas.
  378.  
  379. Q. - What is the picture quality really like?
  380.  
  381. A. - Not bad at all! I was surprised to be honest!! The S-Video quality
  382.      is better that the composite video of course. Better than your
  383.      average cable system, but not by that much, unless you are using
  384.      the S-Video. On the technical side: the DSS system offers up to
  385.      400 lines resolution. Studio quality resolution is the full 525 lines.
  386.      If you want full 525 line studio quality resolution which looks
  387.      great on a big screen TV, the only way to get it is with the
  388.      traditional C Band systems.
  389.  
  390. Q. - It is compatible with my VCR? (Can I tape from it?)
  391.  
  392. A. - Yes, no problem, except for Pay Per View programs. Several different
  393.      ways you can do this. They are covered in great detail in the manual.
  394.      Although, the box itself has no programming/timer ability so, you have
  395.      to leave the box on to tape from it. You are not able to program the
  396.      box itself to come on at certain time and change the channel and shut
  397.      the box off when it is finished like you can on traditional C Band
  398.      systems.
  399.  
  400. Q. - It is compatible with all TVs?
  401.  
  402. A. - Yes, it will work with any TV, but of course newer TVs that have a
  403.      S-Video input are the best to use. TVs that have composite inputs
  404.      will also work quite well. It will also work with a standard RF
  405.      connection if this is all you have. Best quaility will take S-Video
  406.      connection and second choice is RCA type composite inputs and third
  407.      choice will we the RF Anntenna Input.
  408.      The traditional C Band system, on the other hand, is fully compatible
  409.      with ALL NTSC TV sets and you get the full 525 line video resolution
  410.      without having to have a TV set with the S-Video connector.
  411.  
  412. Q. - Is this a "flash in the pan" or is it something that
  413.      RCA/Thomson/USSB/DirecTV are really commited to?
  414.  
  415. A. - Well, they appear to want to make this work, but it is a little
  416.      early to tell. They do have some SERIOUS money tied up in DSS! They
  417.      will need to 'fix' the rain fade problem, though, because eventually
  418.      consumers will get tired of the picture freezing every time anything
  419.      other than light rain goes through their neighborhood.
  420.  
  421. Q. - What about a program guide for DSS?
  422.  
  423. A. - There are several publishers that publish one. Ask your satellite dealer.
  424.  
  425. Q. - Does the dish move?
  426.  
  427. A. - No, once you aim it and get it tuned to the strongest possible
  428.      signal, you are all set. Your dish only views 2 satellites, it does not
  429.      have the capability to 'look' at the other 22 satellites that are
  430.      viewable by the traditional C Band systems nor the additional 21
  431.      Ku Band satellites also viewable with upgraded traditional C Band systems.

  433. Q. - Which system should I get?  The Deluxe, Basic or C Band?
  434.  
  435. A. - Simple... Do you ever think you might want to add a second TV in
  436.      another area of your house to the system? If the answer is YES,
  437.      then buy the Deluxe system. The Deluxe system is constructed a
  438.      little better than the Basic and has a nicer remote, but really
  439.      they are very close. If you want the ability to look at ALL the
  440.      satellites in orbit, full video resolution, no digital artifacts
  441.      in the picture, over 100 free channels, better control of your
  442.      VCR and NO rain fade problems, you should seriously consider a
  443.      traditional C Band system instead.
  444.  
  445. Q. - If I move can the system go with me?
  446.  
  447. A. - Yes, if you move, all you have to do it re-install the system and
  448.      call in and they can put you back on line very quickly.
  449.  
  450. Q. - What is the difference between the RCA DSS and the Primestar System
  451.      that I have been seeing on TV as of late?
  452.  
  453. A. - Well, to be honest details about Primestar are quite hard to come
  454.      by. I have not been able as of yet to gather enough information on
  455.      Primestar to be able to tell you a lot, however it also suffers the
  456.      same kind of rain fade problems. Primestar is a DBS system similar
  457.      to the RCA DSS System, but it is quite different and uses different
  458.      programming and another satellite all together. The two systems are
  459.      NOT cross-compatible.
  460.

  494. Q. - What about these other new cable companies knocking on my door
  495.      telling me that they are selling direct TV? Is it a DBS type
  496.      system?
  497.  
  498. A. - Most likely not!  Most likely what they are trying to see you is
  499.      another technology called Microwave Broadcast TV. The way this works
  500.      is that the company installs a special antenna outside your house
  501.      and the signal is microwaved around your comunity. The quality is
  502.      limited and is also subject to rain fade, but the cost is cheap. Most
  503.      of the time channel selection is also limited to 15 or 20 channels.
  504.      However, one such provider in my area is only charging $19.95 per month
  505.      for 15 watchable channels and an additional $10 per preminum channel. I
  506.      have heard of many scams in this area and I suggest the buyer be
  507.      careful, make sure you know what you are getting for the price and
  508.      make sure that the company who is installing it owns the equipment,
  509.      that way, your personal out of pocket money is less, should the
  510.      company go belly up. (This has been the case with many of these
  511.      Microwave TV companies!)
  512.  
  513. Q. - Is the RCA DSS better than a conventional satellite system?
  514.  
  515. A. - NO. You will have to look at what you are getting for the money and
  516.      then choose. With a conventional satellite system you are going to
  517.      get a lot more channels for the money, over 100 are free. The cost of
  518.      programming is less. If you live in an apartment or don't own the
  519.      property you are living on the RCA DSS might be a better solution.
  520.      Still, if you want the best, you are much better off with a traditional
  521.      C Band satellite system, if you can afford it, and have the space

  526. A. - Not as far as I know. However, everyone I have asked doesn't know
  527.      the answer to the question either. All traditional C Band system DO
  528.      support parental lock out of any single or of multiple channels.

  530. Q. - Will scrambling ever become an issue with the either type of satellite

  533. A. - I have been assured by more than one person that if they were to
  534.      change the scrambling technology, both the RCA DSS and the C Band system
  535.      is able to be changed as well to remain compatible. They are both
  536.      upgradable at little or no cost to you if they change the scrambling
  537.      they are currently using!

  542. A. - Video Magazine says they are going to do a full write up on
  543.      the RCA DSS system in the October 1994 issue of the magazine.
